Reflections on My Introduction to New Media Class
Reflections on My Introduction to New Media Class
Taking the Introduction to New Media course has broadened my understanding of how digital communication works and how it influences everyday life. Although I interacted with digital platforms before, this class helped me understand them in a more structured and academic way. Below are three of the major things I learned and how they have influenced my perception and use of new media.
1. Three New Things I Learned
a. Key Concepts and Definitions in New Media
From Week 1, I learned clear definitions of media, new media, digital media, social media, and computer-mediated communication (CMC). Understanding the difference between these concepts helped me realise that new media is a whole communication system, not just apps on a phone.
b. Synchronous and Asynchronous CMC
Learning that digital communication has two main forms synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (delayed responses) opened my eyes to how different platforms function. This concept changed how I view conversations online.
c. Characteristics of New Media
Features like interactivity, demassification, immediacy, hypertext, and universality showed me the real power behind digital communication. These characteristics explain why information spreads fast and why new media has become so influential.
2. How These Lessons Have Changed My Perception and Use of New Media
a. I now understand the structure behind digital communication.
Because I know the definitions and concepts, I no longer see new media as just entertainment. I now recognise it as a powerful communication environment with rules, features, and systems.
b. I communicate more wisely and intentionally online.
Understanding synchronous and asynchronous communication helps me manage expectations. I choose platforms more carefully depending on urgency, and I am more patient with delayed replies on asynchronous platforms.
c. I am more careful about the content I create and share.
Knowing the characteristics of new media especially immediacy and universality has made me more responsible. I now understand how fast my posts can travel and how many people can access them.
Conclusion
These lessons have shaped both my academic understanding and my personal behaviour on digital platforms. I now approach new media with more awareness, responsibility, and intentionality. The course has helped me see new media as a powerful tool that must be used wisely and thoughtfully.
